Amber Heard’s Role as Mera in Aquaman 3: Uncertain Future in DCEU?

As the release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom approaches, there are lingering uncertainties about Amber Heard’s continuation as Mera in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). Heard has faced significant backlash due to her high-profile defamation trial with ex-husband Johnny Depp.
During the trial, Heard mentioned that her role in the sequel had been reduced, and she believed her contract with DC was terminated.
Comments made by Jason Momoa on The Tonight Show have added to the uncertainty. Momoa stated that Aquaman 2 would be his final appearance as Arthur Curry, hinting at a potential franchise reboot.

Former DC head Walter Hamada has supported the idea of recasting Heard, citing a perceived lack of chemistry with Momoa. Additionally, a longstanding petition from fans has called for her removal from Aquaman 2 amid domestic abuse allegations.

As DC undergoes a transition with new leadership from James Gunn and Peter Safran, there’s a trend toward rebooting characters rather than continuing from previous iterations.
Gunn is reportedly contemplating new actors for iconic roles such as Superman, Batman, and Aquaman. While original stars like John Cena and Viola Davis are expected to return, Heard’s storyline as Mera appears disjointed from future plans.
Considering the backlash and the possibility of the character’s universe being reinvented, recasting seems inevitable if the franchise moves forward beyond the upcoming film. Heard’s future involvement remains unclear as DC charts its new creative direction.
